1889

Mintage:  48,866,025

Proofs:  3,336

Comments:  1889 cent production was the highest for the 1880's.  Certain percentage of 1889 cents encountered appear streaky in appearance due to unevenly mixed alloys.  There are some cents made from the unevenly mixed alloy that will tone to a heavy mottled appearance that will affect the eye appeal.  Collectors should avoid the aforementioned adverse toning and locate coins that are attractive, well struck and problem free.

The best die variety for 1889 is variety 1, which is included in the top 100 varieties for the series.
