Mintage:  28,075,000

Comments:  This date is easily found throughout the grading spectrum because of the combination of mintage and hoarding during the civil war.  Pricing structure reflects a slight premium due to additional demand from civil war memorabilia collectors, as well as the coin collecting body.  Remarkably, I remember the price point for a XF40 being $20 around the early 2000's and now in 2014, the price has elevated to $42 or so.  There are many examples to choose from, so choose the most eye appealing and well struck example for a collection.  In addition, pay particular attention to grading standards for copper nickel cents, as they wear differently from the softer bronze issues.

The best die varieties for this year are the Snow 5 and Snow 6 doubled die reverses.  They are both included in the top 100 variety list and are interesting in the fact that they are very similar, but are two different classes  of doubled die.  Snow 2 is a fantastic example of misplaced digits extending from the denticles into the field, but die abrasion has caused them to be indistinct.  The misplaced digits of Snow 4 and Snow 11 are similar and situated in the same position relative to the date; however, Snow 4 date is almost touching the bust point.
