1896 Variety 13

Obverse 5

Reverse Q

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position and Repunched 1 and 6

Obverse 5 is initially in its earliest die state and is identified by repunching on the 6 to the east, with only the earliest die states exhibiting repunching on the flag of the 1.  Date placement is C, with a slight upward slope of the date.

Reverse Q is observed with shield points and olive leaf connected to the denticles.  Clash marks are visible to the left and right of the denomination.

Comments:  Obverse 5 was initially in service during variety 13 and was later paired with reverse E during variety 1.  Variety 1 and 13 may be differentiated by the reverses, where the reverse of variety 1 features the olive leaf and shield points away from the denticles and the variety 13 reverse is observed with the olive leaf and shield points connected.
