1896 Variety 1
Obverse 5 has now developed die flow lines from the denticles
throughout the die face. The repunching on the 6 remains clear as
opposed to the the repunching on the 1, which fades during the initial
die pairing of obverse 5 in the variety 13 die pair.
Reverse E is rotated 7 degrees clockwise and is observed with shield points and olive leaf well away from
the denticles. Reverse E is in a similar die state as obverse 5,
with die flow lines from the denticles to the center of the die.
Comments: Obverse 5 was initially in service during the variety 13
die pair, while paired with reverse Q. The question of why reverse
Q was replaced with reverse E remains unanswered, as reverse E has not
been found with any damage or die deterioration that would retire the
die.
Plate Coin: D. Poliquin, VF30
