Obverse
3 is identified date placement at LH and date repunching that features
initial date impressions to the south below the base of the 1, base of
the 9 and within the 0. Obv. 3.2:
Obverse 3 has now developed heavy die flow lines and a small
die chip has formed within the lower loop of the 6.
Reverse C is yet to be observed with any die markers. Rev. C.2:
Reverse C is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and has developed
heavy die flow lines and a radial die crack from the rim at 2:15.
Comments:
During mid January 2018, David Killough submitted an example of
Variety 2 with what appeared to be an additional initial date
impression within the lower loop of the 6. Upon examination of
David's coin, I was able to determine that his example was struck from
a later die state of Variety 2 and that the artifact within the lower
loop of the 6 is a die chip that formed due to the advanced die state
of Obverse 3. In addition, a routine die rotation measurement
yielded a 5 dgree clockwise rotation of Reverse C. As a result, I
have assigned David's coin as the Variety 2a Plate Coin in order to
capture the newly identified incremental die state and die rotation.
The
Variety 2a die rotation is somewhat puzzling to me, as I had not
indicated any die rotation during the Variety 2 die state. There
may be a possibility that the Variety 2a die rotation is a static
rotational attribute of the Variety 2 die pairing and that I neglected
to measure this rotation when I first published this page with the
Variety 2 Plate Coin.
