Obverse 44 is identified by date placement at RH and date repunching
that features an initial date impression within the lower loop of the
9. Obverse 44 has developed moderately heavy die flow lines and
has acquired a clash mark in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a
clashing event with Reverse AS.
Reverse AS is in a similar die state as Obverse 44, with the
advancement of moderately heavy die flow lines. Reverse AS has
acquired a clash mark through the C of CENT from a clashing event with
Obverse 44.
Comments:
Obverse 44 has proven to be difficult to attribute due to the
weakness of the date, which may or may not be an attribute of Obverse
44. I suspect that the initial date impression within the lower
loop of the 9 of Obverse 44 was to the southwest with respect to the
final date placement. In addition, there is an artifact in the
lower loop of the 6 that may be associated with the initial date
impression found within the lower loop of the 9. However, date
overlays that I performed do not align with the initial date impression
of the 9. The artifact within the lower loop of the 6 may just be
a mark on the coin, but I have photographed it nonetheless in the event
that another example of Variety 41 with a stronger date will be located.
Obverse
44 and Reverse AS were struck from misaligned working dies, with the
misalignment noticeable at the top of Obverse 44 and at the bottom of
Reverse AS.
Variety 41 was first identified by David Killough,
who submitted the above plate coin during late July 2018 for inclusion in
this book based on the date repunching of Obverse 44.
