1896 Variety 36

Obverse 39

Reverse AN

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Repunched 6

Obverse 39 is identified by date placement at RE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the west within the lower loop of the 9 and upper loop of the 6.

Reverse AN has yet to be observed with any die markers.

Comments:  Variety 36 was first identified by Ed Nathanson, who initially submitted his discovery piece to Rick Snow for attribution where it was assigned the Snow 27 die pairing.

During early April 2018, David Killough submitted a higher grade example of Variety 36 to Rick Snow that featured a previously unidentified initial date impression to the west within the lower loop of the 9.  David's coin was consequently used as the plate coin for Snow 27 and his images are now used here to illustrate Variety 36.

All examples of Variety 36 that I have seen thus far exhibit strike weakness on the first three feather tips
