Variety 32
Obverse 35 is identified by date placement at C with date repunching
that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif of
the 1, to the east within the lower loop of the 9 and to the east
within the upper loop of the 6. Obverse 35 has developed
moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.
Reverse AJ is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and is in a similar die state
as Obverse 35, with the advancement of moderately heavy to heavy die
flow lines.
Comments:
The date repunching of Obverse 35 is peculiar with the dull
repunching within the lower loop of the 9 and the vivid repunching within the upper loop of the 6, which resembles a die crack rather than
an initial date impression. Upon close examination, the artifacts
within the lower loop of the 9 are the initial date impressions of the
ball and lower edge of the upper loop of the 9; while the artifact
within the upper loop of the 6 is the initial date impression of the
right side of the upper loop of the 6. I surmise that the
resulting initial date impressions were the result of a combination of
the digit punch located to the southeast and exhibiting pivot rotation
of approximately 4 degrees counter clockwise with respect to the final
date placement.
All
examples of Variety 32 I have seen thus far have exhibited later die
states, with the discovery piece exhibiting further degradation with
the development of a small die break forming from the right arm of the
T of CENT on the reverse.
