Variety 21
Obverse Diagnostics
Date Position | Die Chip from the top of the 9 |
Obverse 24 is identified by date placement of B and with a sizeable die
chip from the top right of the 9. Obverse 24 is observed with die
flow lines and clash marks in front of the face of Miss Liberty.
Reverse Y is observed with die flow lines and clash marks to the left and right of the denomination.
Comments:
The obverse 24 die chip has been theorized to be a portion of the
digit punch that broke away and consequently got impressed into the
working die along with the date impression.
Although
I have only the images provided by Rick Snow of the plate coin, there
appears to be wide repunching to the west on the 89 digits. I
have contacted Rick regarding the repunching, but I have not heard back
from him to confirm the repunching.
Variety 21 was first
identified by Doug Hill and presented in the April 2015 Longacre's
Ledger. Within the August 2015 Longacre's Ledger, W.O. Walker
indicated he has had a VF35 example of variety 21 since 8/8/93.
Since
only 8 examples have been identified from the span from 1993 until
2019, the current rarity estimate is URS-5. It seems curious that
no other examples have been found, considering the die state indicates
at least a relatively long production of cents.
