1883 Variety 25

Obverse 30

Reverse AD

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Misplaced 8 or 3

Defective Digit Punch Artifact above the 3

Obverse 30 is identified by a misplaced 8 or 3 in the denticles directly below the second 8, with date placement at RH.

Reverse AD is yet to be observed with any die markers.

Comments:  Variety 25 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during early October 2016 for inclusion in this book based on the obverse 30 misplaced digit.  Examination of the obverse 30 misplaced digit reveals curvature similar to the top right of either an 8 or 3 digit.

Although it appears to be date repunching, the anomaly above the 3 digit is an artifact from the digit punch utilized in 1883 to impress the date into the working die.  As a result, many 1883 obverses will exhibit this digit punch defect above the 3 in the date.

Variety 25 is very similar to variety 24.  However, the misplaced digit for variety 25 is located directly under the 8 compared to under the right side of the 8 for variety 24.  In addition, the date placement for variety 25 is lower to the denticles and farther right of the bust point than variety 24.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, VF25 (Snow 18 Plate Coin)
