Obverse
15 is identified by date placement at LE and defective upper loop 3
with a broken lower loop.
Reverse O has developed heavy die flow lines and the following die
cracks:
1. Die crack from the rim at 3:15 into the right wreath.
2. Die crack from the rim at 8:15 into the top olive leaf.
3. Die crack from the rim at 9:00 downward through the outer
edge of the wreath to die crack #2.
4. Die crack from the rim at 9:15 upward through the left
wreath.
Comments:
Many 1883 obverses will feature a defect above the top loop
of the 3 and / or a broken lower loop. The defect above the
top loop of the 3 is most likley associated with the digit punch matix,
while the broken lower loop is a product of the digit punch breaking in
this area and should not be confused with date repunching.
The digit punch that was in service impressing dates into
1883 dimes also broke in a similar location to that of the 1883 cent
digit punch, though the dime digit punch eventually will completely
break in this area. The following compares the broken 3 on
both the cent and dime digit punches of 1883.

Reverse O has developed heavy die flow lines, while Obverse 15 is
clearly in an earlier die state in comparison. This contrast in die
states between Obverse 15 and Reverse O suggests Reverse O was in service prior to the Variety 10 die pairing.
Variety 10 was first identified
by David Killough, who submitted the
above plate coin during late July 2018.
