1859

Mintage:  36,400,000

Comments:  This date is found easily throughout the grading spectrum, but they are premium priced due to the one year type status this date holds.  Many coins encountered are from late die state working dies that were worn and wlll impart mushy details on the coins minted.  Since scarcity isn't an issue, collectors should take the time to find attractive, well struck 1859 cents.  In addition, collectors should be very attentive to grading.  Grading standards have degraded and many coins, including slabbed ones, are overgraded to varying degrees.  Special attention must be paid to the copper nickel issue, as these wear differently than the bronze issue because of the composition difference.

Snow 1 is the best die variety for the year.  Snow 1, Snow 2, and Snow 3 are included in the top 100 varieties list.
