Obverse 36 is identified by date placeent at B and misplaced 190 in the denticles below the date.  Obverse 36 is in an early die state with the presence of random die polish lines, with a prominent one through the last 1 of the date.
Obv. 36.2:  Obverse 36 has developed moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.
Obv. 36.3:  Obverse 36 has developed heavy die flow lines.

Reverse AJ is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and has developed moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.
Rev. AJ.2:  Reverse AJ has developed heavy die flow lines.
Rev. AJ.2:  Reverse AJ has developed very heavy die flow lines.

Comments:  Obverse 36 would appear to exhibit three separate initial date impressions in the denticles below the date.  Two initial date impressions yield a 9 and 0 in the denticles, with the top of a misplaced 9 in the denticles below the primary 9 and a 0 below and to the left of the primary 0.  These two initial date impressions are illustrated in the date overlay image within the obverse diagnostics, where the second impression would be located slightly to the north of the date overlay.  The second date impression only yields the top of a 1 digit, which is located in the denticles between the primary 1 and 9 of the date.

Obverse 36 is in an earlier die state in comparison to Reverse AJ, which exhibits moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.  This observation indicates that Variety 31 was the initial die pairing of Obverse 36, whereas Reverse AJ was in service prior to Variety 31.

Variety 31 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid January 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 36 date repunching.  David's submission also included two other incremental die states of Variety 31, which have been plated below in the 'Die States For 1901 Variety 31' table and assigned Variety 31a and 31b to capture the associated die states.
