Obverse 29.2  Die Break on Eighth Feather

Reverse Diagnostics

Reverse AC.2  Die Crack

Obverse 29 is observed with date placement of B.  Obverse 29 has developed die flow lines throughout the die face and two die breaks, one directly under the chin and another at the tip of the eighth feather.

Reverse AC is observed with the right shield point connected to the denticles and the left shield point and olive leaf away from the denticles.  Reverse AC is in a similar die state as obverse 29, with die flow lines evident.  In addition, a die crack develops on the outside of the wreath from 1:15 to 2:00.

Comments:  The point of interest for variety 24 is the die break that forms under the chin during the obverse 29.2  die state.  Rick Snow has given this variety the moniker 'Whiskers', because the die  break under the chin resembles chin whiskers.

The additional die break at the eighth feather tip is seen on some working dies from the late 1890's to the 1900's.  In some instances, it is seen in conjunction with another die break on the ninth feather tip. The ninth feather tip die break occurs frequently in 1899.

Plate Coin:  Ed Nathanson, MS63RB
