Obverse 48 is identified by date placement at RE, die line from the denticles at 7:15 diagonally above the top of the 1 and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif of the 1; to the southeast within the lower loop of the 8; to the east within the lower loop of the first 9; to the east within the lower loop of the second 9.  Obverse 48 has developed heavy die flow lines and has acquired a clash mark in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse AV.

Reverse AV is in a similar die state as Obverse 48, with the advancement of heavy die flow lines.  Reverse AV has acquired a clash mark Through the C of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 48.

Comments:  The initial date impression to the east within the lower loop of the first 9 is quite minor in comparison to the initial date impression within the lower loop of the second 9 and may not be visible on circulated examples.

Variety 44 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid May 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 48 date repunching.
