Obverse 31 is identified by date placement at LE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south within the lower loop and outside bottom right of the upper loop of the 8; to the south within the lower loop of the 9.  Obverse 31 has acquired light to moderately heavy die flow lines and has acquired clash marks in front of the eye of Miss Liberty and below the 1 and between the 97 of the date from a clashing event with Reverse AE.

Reverse AE has developed moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines and has acquired clash marks through the C of CENT, above the O of ONE and to the right of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 31.

Comments:   Obverse 31 and Reverse AE clash at least twice, with one clashing event occuring during a working die misalignment that resulted in off-center clash marks below the date.  Reverse AE has acquired three sets of clash marks, while Obverse 31 exhibits only two sets.

Obverse 31 and Reverse AE exhibit contrasting die states, which indicates that Reverse AE was in service prior to the Variety 29 die pairing.  The prior service of Reverse AE may explain the extra set of clash marks Reverse AE has acquired in comparison to Obverse 31.

Variety 29 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid May 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 31 date repunching.
