Rev. D.2 Die Cracking (Click Image To Enlarge)

Obverse 4 is observed with date placement at LE.

Reverse D is rotated 6 degrees clockwise and has developed the following die crack:
1.  Moderately heavy die crack between 3:15 and 5:00.
Rev. D.2:  The die cracking between 3:15 and 5:00 has become more severe and Reverse D has developed the following additional die crack:
2.  Severe die crack from the rim at 3:45 extends into the right wreath.

Comments:  During the Reverse D.2 Die State, Reverse D has developed severe die cracking between 3:15 and 5:00, with the areas located at 3:15 and 5:00 devloping bi-level field areas.  Based on the severity of the Reverse D.2 die cracking, I suspect a die break in this area during a subsequent Reverse D die state.

Variety 2 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the Variety 2a Plate Coin photographed below during early October 2016 for inclusion in this book based on the severe die cracking of Reverse D.

During mid August 2023, the above plate coin was submitted by David Killough for inclusion in this book based on the reverse die cracking.  Upon examination of David's coin, I was able to determine his example was struck from the Variety 2 Die Pairing prior to the Reverse D.2 Die State.
