Obverse 39 is observed with date placement at RH and has developed die cracking.

Reverse AN is rotated 9 degrees clockwise. Reverse AN has developed die cracking and has acquired a clash mark through (C)ENT presumably from a clashing event with Obverse 39.
Rev. AN.2: Reverse AN has now developed a retained cud between 2:15 and 5:00.
Rev. AN.3: The retained portion of the Reverse AN break is now absent, resulting in a full cud.

Comments: The 1887 Variety 34a retained cud was first identified in 'The Cud Book' by Sam Thurman and Arnold Margolis, with a reference number of IC-1887-1RA Ret. The Variety 34a Plate Coin is the IC-1887-1RA Ret Plate Coin in 'The Cud Book'.

The 1887 Variety 34b full cud was first identified in 'The Design Cud' by Paul Marvin and Arnold Margolis, with a reference number of IC-1887-1R. The Variety 34b Plate Coin is the IC-1887-1R Plate Coin in the 'The Design Cud' and the IC-1887-1RB Plate Coin in the 'The Cud Book', by Sam Thurman and Arnold Margolis.

During late March 2023, Walter Seiller submitted an example of Variety 34 prior to the formation of the Reverse AN.2 retained die break. Walter's coin is now the Variety 34 Plate Coin in order to capture the earlier Reverse AN die state.
