Die Erosion Under Right Arm Of T Of CENT

Obverse 26 is observed with date placement at LE.

Reverse AA is observed with die erosion within the O of ONE, to the left and within the C of CENT and under the right arm of T of CENT.  Reverse AA develops the following die cracks:
1.  Light die crack from the right side of the shield into the right wreath.
2.  Heavy die crack between 3:30 and 5:00.
3.  Heavy die crack between 6:30 and 8:15.
4.  Heavy die crack at 10:30 in the left wreath.

Comments:  The Reverse AA die erosion is not the product of die wear, rather the result of an improperly annealed working die.  The Reverse AA die erosion is similar to that of 1880 Reverse P.2 from the 1880 Variety 15 die pairing, though 1880 Reverse P.2 is dramatically more degraded.

Variety 21 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during early February 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Reverse AA die cracking.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, VF35
