Reverse W Die Crack Mapping

Reverse W Die Crack through Wreath Stem and Arrow Heads

Obverse 22 is observed with date placement at LH.  Obverse 22 has acquired heavy die clashes between feathers 7, 8 and 9 and a moderately heavy die clash by the last feather.  Obverse 22 develops the following die crack:
1.  Die crack connecting the bottoms of the last 8 and 7.

Reverse W has developed the following die crack:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 3:30 downward through the wreath to the denticles at 5:15.

Comments:  Variety 17 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during early October 2016 for inclusion in this book based on the die cracking of Reverse W.  Examination of David's coin reveals heavy die clashes between feathers 7, 8 and 9 and a moderately heavy die clash by the last feather.  The contrast between the severity of the obverse 22 die clashes is the point of interest for variety 17 and the reason why this variety is listed.  The lack of any discernible clash marks on Reverse W may indicate that Obverse 22 was in service in a prior die pairing where it most likely acquired heavy clash marks from a clashing event with another reverse.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, VG8
