Obverse 21 is observed with date placement at LH and a clash mark in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with reverse V.

Reverse V has acquired a clash mark through the C of CENT from a clashing event with obverse 21.  Reverse V has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Light die crack from the denticles at 12:45 into the right side of the shield.
2.  Light die crack fromt the right side of the shield to the top of the right wreath.
3.  Die crack within the right wreath between 2:00 and 4:00.
4.  Die crack from the rim at 7:00 up through the left wreath.
5.  Die crack from the rim at 7:45 up through the left wreath.
6.  Die crack from the rim at 9:30 up through the left wreath.
7.  Die crack from the rim at 10:30 down through the left wreath.

Comments:  Variety 16 is characterized by a predominantly cracked left wreath and an uncracked obverse.  Several 1887 reverses exhibit similar die cracking on the left side with varying degrees of die breakage within the left wreath.

Variety 16 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during early October 2016 for inclusion in this book based on the die cracking of reverse V.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, AU50
