Die Break Between 8:00 and 9:15

Clash Mark To The Right Of The Denomination

Clash Marks Above and Through C of CENT

Obverse 18 is identified by date placement at C with date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the flag, top right and base of the 7..  Obverse 18 acquired a clash mark of the C of CENT in front of the eye from a clashing event with Reverse S.

Reverse S is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and has acquired a clash mark to the right of the denomination and clash marks of the profile of Miss Liberty above and through C of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 18.  Reverse S develops the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack in the right wreath between 2:30 and 4:15.
2.  Die crack from the rim at 8:00 through the olive leaves that intersects a long die crack that extends from the olive leaves upward to the top right of the shield.
3.  Die crack from the rim at 9:45 into the wreath that intersects a long die crack that extends from the olive leaves upward to the top right of the shield.  A large die break develops within the left wreath between 8:00 and 9:15, connecting the two die cracks from 8:00 and 9:45.

Comments:  The Obverse 18 repunching below the base of the 7 will fade on lower grades and/or die states, but the repunching below the right top of the 7 remains.

The reverse S die crack within the right wreath may very well be associated with the die cracking that develops within the left wreath.  However, a higher grade example is required to ascertain the exact die crack progression through the lower section of the wreath.

Plate coin:  Robert Malo, Jr. Collection, XF40
