Obverse 9 is identified by date placement at RE and Class V Pivot Hub Doubling of '(UN)ITED', 'STA(TES)', 'LIB(ERTY)', 'OF AMERICA', designer's initial and feathers 3-9.  Obverse 9 has acquired a clash mark in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse J.  Obverse 9 has developed the following die crack:
1.  Light die crack connecting the digits of the date.

Reverse J is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and has acquired a clash mark through (C)ENT from a clashing event with Obverse 9.  Reverse J has developed the following die crack:
1.  Light die crack from the rim at 2:00 extends downward along the outer edge of the right wreath.
Rev. J.2:  The light die crack from 2:00 has become more severe and now exits into the rim at 4:00.  Reverse J has developed the following additional die cracks:
1.  Radial die crack from the rim at 1:15 extends toward the center of the die, where it intersects the top of the ON(E).
2.  Die crack from the rim at 10:00 extends downward along the outer edge of the left wreath and exits into the rim at 8:45.
Rev. J.2:  Reverse J has now developed a partial cud between 8:45 and 10:00.

Comments:  The Class V Pivot Hub Doubling of Obverse 9 exhibits counter clockwise rotation, with the pivot point at approximately 9:00.  Due to the nature of pivot hub doubling, the strongest doubling will be seen directly opposite of the pivot point.  Therefore, the strongest doubling of Obverse 9 will be seen on 'OF AMERICA' since it is directly opposite the pivot point of the working hub and working die misalignment during the hubbing of Obverse 9.

During mid August of 2016, Craig McClain submitted an ANACS G4 1887 struck from the Variety 4 Die Pairing that exhibited a partial cud between 8:45 and 10:00.  Craig's coin, which is listed below in the 1887 Variety 4 Die State Table, was assigned Variety 4b in order to capture the Reverse J.3 partial cud formation.
