1884 Variety 9

Obverse 12

Reverse N

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Repunched 88 to the Southeast

Obverse 12 is identified by repunching to the southeast on the 88 of the date, with date placement at RH.

Reverse N has yet to be observed with any die markers.

Comments:  Variety 9 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during early October 2016 for inclusion in this book based on the date repunching of obverse 12. Examination of the date repunching reveals an initial date impression that was located to the southeast in comparison to the primary date location.  The repunching located at the outside on the left side of the lower loop of the first 8 most likely indicates a clockwise digit punch rotation with respect to the primary date placement.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, F15
