Obverse 24 is identified by date placement at C and date repunching
that features initial date impressions to the north within the lower
loops of the 8 digits.
Reverse W has acquired clash marks and has developed the following die cracks: 1. Die crack from the denticles at 12:30 extends into the top right of the shield. 2. Die crack from the denticles at 7:45 extends through the olive leaves. 3. Die crack from the rim at 11:15 extends into the top left of the shield.
Comments: Obverse 24
features localized die polishing of the field area around the date and
within the loops of the 8 digits, which has resulted in these areas
being more raised in comparison to the rest of the Obverse 24 field
areas. This die polishing may have been performed by the Mint in
an effort to efface the initial date impressions of Obverse 24.
Obverse
24 and Reverse W exhibit contrasting die states, with Obverse 24
developing little to no die flow lines and Reverse W developing
moderately heavy die flow lines. This contrast in die states
indicates Reverse W was in service prior to Variety 22.
Variety
22 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above
plate coin during early January 2022 for inclusion in this book based
on the date repunching of Obverse 24.
