 Off-Center Clash Marks |
Obverse 10 is identified by date placement at LH and an off-center
clash mark located on the neck of Miss LIBERTY. Obverse 11 is
observed with a die chip just behind the first hair curl and another
below the clash marks on the neck. Obverse 11 acquired a clash
mark from the C of CENT of reverse I in front the eye.
Reverse I has acquired a clash mark from the nose of Miss LIBERTY of obverse 10 through the C of CENT.
Comments: In regards to
the obverse 10 off-center clash marks, prevailing theory suggests these
are from the denticles of another working die for the purpose of a
"hardness" test. Since the clash marks are found in a recessed
portion of the working die, the obverse 10 working die would have had
to been in an annealed state to receive them.
Rick Snow was very kind in allowing me to use his images to illustrate variety 9 for this book.
