Type II Reverse R Die Crack Mapping


Obverse 19 is identified by date placement at RH and hub-through artifacts located among the denticles of the southwest quadrant.  Obverse 19 has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the denticles at 1:00 extends downward through the tops of 'OF' and continues above '(A)MERICA'.
2.  Die crack from the denticles at 2:30 extends downward and connects the tops of 'A(MER)ICA'.
3.  Die crack from the denticles at 6:45 extends to the right and connects the bases of the 1, 8 and 7 digits of the date.
4.  Die crack segment connects the tops of 'STA(TES)'.

Type II Reverse R is rotated 13 degrees clockwise and has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the denticles at 12:30 extends through the top of the shield and exits into the rim at 11:30.
2.  Die crack from the rim at 1:00 extends downward through the outer edge of the right wreath.
3.  Die crack from the denticles at 3:30 extends downward into the lowest outside oak leaf of the right wreath.

Comments:  1872 Type II Reverse Variety 17 represents the initial usage of Obverse 19, which will later be in service paired with Type II Reverse S during the 1872 Type II Variety 18 Die Pairing.

1872 Type II Reverse Variety 17 was first identified by this author during October 2007.
