Obverse 20 is observed with date placement at LH and has acquired clash
marks.
Reverse T is rotated 21 degrees counter clockwise and has developed the
following die crack:
1. Severe die crack from the rim at 1:15 extends downward
through the right wreath and exits into the rim at 2:30.
Comments:
Obverse 20 appears to have been in service prior to Variety
21, since Obverse 20 exhibits a later die state compared to Reverse T.
In addition, Obverse 20 has acquired clash marks, while
Reverse T does not appear to have acquired any clash makrs.
There is a possibility that Obverse 20 may actually be
Obverse 16 from the 1867
Variety 16 Die Pairing, though I am presently unable to
definitively determine that these obverses were struck from
the same obverse working die.
Variety
21 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above
plate coin during early July 2022 for inclusion in this book based on
the die rotation of Variety 21 and the die cracking of Reverse T.
