The second usage of Obverse 41. Obverse 41 is observed with
date placement at RE. The ninth feather die break has
enlarged slightly compared to the previous usage of Obverse 41 and now
a small die chip has developed on the eighth feather. In
addition, the die crack at the base of the date has become more severe
compared to the previous usage of Obverse 41. Obverse 41 has
clashed with Reverse AAAL.
Reverse AAAL is rotated 4 degrees clockwise and has developed a
retained cud between 11:45 and 12:30. Reverse AAAL has
acquired clash marks located right of the denomination from a clashing
event with Obverse 41. Reverse AAAL has developed the
following die crack:
1. Die crack from the rim at 11:00 extends across into the
upper left side of the shield.
Comments: Variety
38 represents the second usage of Obverse 41, which was previously in
service paired with Reverse AAS during the 1864 Bronze Variety 28 Die
Pairing. Reverse AAS developed a cud at a location
similar to that of the retained cud of Reverse AAAL and was subsequently
retired from service. It is interesting to note that both die
pairings of which Obverse 41 was in service developed reverse cuds.
Variety 38 was first identified by Paul Nomes, who submitted the above plate coin during late June 2021 for inclusion in this book based on the retained cud of Reverse AAAL.
