1864 Bronze
Variety 24
Obverse 32 is identified by wide repunching to the west on the 864,
with date placement at RH. Obverse 32 was struck from
misaligned
working dies and is observed with clash marks between the last three
feathers from a clashing event with reverse AAH.
Reverse AAH is observed with clash marks located to the northeast of
the E of ONE from a clashing event with obverse 32. Reverse
AAH
was also struck with misaligned working dies and has developed the
following die crack:
1. Radial die crack from the rim at 1:00 into the wreath.
Comments:
Obverse 32 will later be paired with Reverse AAAU during the 1864 Bronze Variety 43 Die
Pairing.
The clashing
of Variety 24 occurred during a state of dynamic working die rotation
and the clashing occurred at least twice. Although I did not
possess the plate coin to measure rotation, I would surmise that the
plate coin has a moderate reverse rotation.
Variety 24 was first
identifed by John Young during late January 2016. John was
extremely kind in allowing me to use his images to illustrate Variety
24 for this book.
