1863 Variety 20

Obverse 20

Reverse V

Obverse Diagnostics

Repunched 86 to the North

*Close-up of date is courtesy of the Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide by Rick Snow.*

Comments:  Date placement is LH.  Obverse 20 is characterized by repunching to the north on the 86 of the date, with a small die chip off the base of the 3.  The repunching is smillar to variety 17, but the date placements as well as the aforementioned die chip differentiate the two obverses.

Reverse V develops die cracks from the rim at 11:00 through the shield, from shield through the right wreath, from the wreath knot through the olive leaves to the rim at 7:00 and a die crack through much of the left wreath according to Rick Snow.  The die crack at the wreath knot is heavy and considering the degradation of the reverse compared to the fresher obverse, I would expect to find another reverse paired with obverse 20.

Plate Coin:  none available
