3. Obverse 87 has developed a die chip to the right of ST(A)TES and the
following die crack: 1. Die crack connecting the tops of UNI(TED).
Reverse AAAN is rotated 8 degrees clockwise and has developed
continuous rim breakage between 4:30 and 12:00. Reverse AAAN has
developed the following die cracks: 1. Die crack from the rim at 1:00 downward through the edge of the right wreath to the denticles at 2:15. 2. Die crack segment within the right wreath between 2:30 and 3:15. 3. Die crack from the rim at 10:00 downward through the left wreath to 9:00. 4. Die crack from the denticles at 11:15 into the upper left side of the shield.
Comments: The Obverse 87
initial date impressions indicate an initial date impression that was
clockwise with respect to the final date position. As a result,
the initial date impressions within the upper loop of the 6 are from
the top of the lower loop and bottom of the upper loop of the initial
date impression. An additional initial date impression may be
located at the outside right of the lower loop of the 6, though I
cannot definitively confirm that this is an artifact of the initial
date impression.
Variety 90 was first identified by David
Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during late August 2019
for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 87 date repunching and
Reverse AAAN die cracking.
