Obverse 85 is observed with date placement at RE.

Reverse AAAL is rotated 8 degrees clockwise and is identified by die rust within the shield, denomination and wreath.

Comments:  Variety 88 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during late August 2019 for inclusion in this book based on the die rust of Reverse AAAL.

The Reverse AAAL die rust is similar to the die rust of Reverse W from the 1863 Variety 21 Die Pairing and Reverse AAAM from the 1863 Variety 89 Die Pairing.

Examination of Variety 88 reveals differing die states, with Obverse 85 exhibiting moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines and Reverse AAAL exhibiting no discernible die flow lines.  Based on the contrasting die states of Obverse 85 and Reverse AAAL, it is clear that Obverse 85 was in service prior to Variety 88.  The following illustrates the die state contrast between Obverse 85 and Reverse AAAL:
