Reverse AN Die Crack Mapping

The second usage of Obverse 30.  Obverse 30 is observed with date placement at RH.  Obverse 30 has acquired off-center clash marks from its previous service and has developed die cracking.

Reverse AN is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and is observed with lint hub-throughs within both sides of the wreath, among the upper left vertical shield bars and among the denticles in various locations.
Rev. AN.2:  Reverse AN has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 10:30 extends downward through the outer edge of the left wreath and exits into the rim at 9:00.
2.  Light die crack from the rim at 9:15 extends into the left wreath, where it intersects die crack #1.
3.  Die cracks from the rim at 11:30 extend to the top left tip of the shield, where the upper die crack forms a small die break above the shield and the lower crack extends along the top of the shield.
Rev. AN.3:  During this die state, Reverse AN does not exhibit die rotation and has developed a retained cud between 9:15 and 10:30.

Comments:  Variety 38 represents the second usage of Obverse 30, which was previously in service paired with Reverse AF during the 1863 Variety 30 Die Pairing.

The Reverse AN retained die break was initially identified in the book 'The Design Cud', by Paul Marvin and Arnold Margolis.  The Marvin & Margolis reference number is IC-1863-3RA-Ret.
