Reverse AC.4 Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 27 is observed with date placement at RE and broken tops of 'STAT(ES)'.

Reverse AC is rotated 7 degrees clockwise and has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Radial die crack from the rim at 10:00 extends through the left wreath and field to (O)NE.
Rev. AC.2:  The radial die crack from 10:00 has become heavier and Reverse AC has developed the following additional die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 4:00 into the middle arrowhead and from the middle arrowhead upward through the  right wreath.
2.  Die crack from the rim at 5:00 extends upward through the right ribbon end to the right side of the ribbon bow.
3.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 8:15 into the first oak leaf of the left wreath.
4.  Light die crack from the rim at 10:45 extends into the left wreath, where it intersects a newly formed die crack that extends from the lower left side of the shield.
Rev. AC.3:  The die crack from 10:45 now loops around and connects with the radial die crack from 10:00 and Reverse AC has developed the following additional die cracks:
1.  Heavy die crack from the rim at 12:00 extends downward through the top right side of the shield and continues through the left wreath and exits into the rim at 3:45.  The die crack from the middle arrowhead (#1 from the AC.2 Die State) intersects this die crack mid wreath at 2:45.
Rev. AC.4:  The die crack from 12:00 has now become more severe, particularly from the rim at 12:00 to the top of the shield and the die crack connecting the die cracks at 10:00 and 10:45 has become quite severe compared to the AC.3 Die State, with a die break devloping between10:15.  In addition, a break has developed within the left wreath at 2:00 and a smaller die break has developed to the right of the ribbon bow.  Reverse AC has developed the following additional die cracks:
1.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 2:30 extends into the right wreath and intersects the die crack from 12:00 within the wreath at 2:15.
2.  Die crack from the rim at 9:15 extends into the left wreath and intersects a die crack from the die break at 10:00.
Rev. AC.5:  Reverse AC has developed the following die crack:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 1:30 extends into the right wreath.

Comments:   Variety 27 shares the same characteristics of other die pairs, with the obverse suffering little or no cracking while the reverse becomes severely cracked.  1863 Variety 26 represents another die pairing which features a die cracking contrast between obverse and reverse.

The Variety 27 Die Pairing was first identified by Russell Doughty, who submitted the Variety 27b Plate Coin during early January 2015.

During mid March 2021, John Grimmer submitted the Variety 27c Plate Coin.  Variety 27c is similar in die state to Variety 27d, but lacking the Variety 27d Reverse AC die crack from 1:30.
