Repunched 8

Obverse 44 is identified by date placement at RE, artifact that spans the distance of three denticles below the 9 and microscopic date repunching that features initial date impressions to the north within the upper loop of the 9 and within the lower loop of the 8.

Reverse AR has yet to be observed with any die markers.

Comments:  The Obverse 44 artifact in the denticles below the 9 could possibly be the result of a misplaced digit, though it is undetermined what may have caused this artifact.  During an initial examination of the above plate coin, I suspected that the artifact was the base of an inverted 1 that extended the distance of two denticles and was rotated approximtely 162 degrees clockwise with respect to the final date placement. However, closeer examination reveals that the artifact extended the distance of three denticles below the 9 instead of two I first noticed.  Therefore, my theory of a misplaced base of an inverted 1 was untenable since the base of a 1 digit would not extend that distance.  It should be noted that the artifact is bolder through the first two denticles and less so through the third denticle.

Variety 42 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid November 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the possible misplaced digit and repunched date of Obverse 44. David's submission included the above plate coin and another, lower grade example that resided in the same die state as the one above.
