1908 Variety 37

Obverse 39

Reverse AM

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Repunched 1

Top Of A Misplaced Digit

Reverse Diagnostics

Clash Mark Through The C Of CENT

Obverse 39 is identifed by date placement at LE, misplaced digit in the denticles below the 0 of the date and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif and base of the 1.

Reverse AM has acquired a clash mark through the C of CENT.

Comments:  I suspect Reverse AM was in service prior to Variety 37 based on the fact that Reverse AM exhibits a slightly later die state than Obverse 39 and Reverse AM has acquired a clash mark, while Obverse 39 does not show any signs of clashing.

During mid May 2018, David Killough submitted the above plate coin to this author.  Although Variety 37 had been discovered prior to David's submission, David identified date repunching that was previously unattributed to Obverse 39.  It should be noted that there are two initial date impressions below the serif of the 1, while the base of the 1 features only a minor and singular initial date impression.  David's submission included four examples of Variety 37, with each exhibiting approximately equivalent die states.
