Clash Marks To The Rigth Of Denomination

Obverse 49 is observed with date placement at RH and has acquired clash marks above the first three feathers and in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse AX.  Obverse 49 has developed moderately heavy die flow lines and a small rim break at 1:00.

Reverse AX has developed a retained cud between 3:15 and 4:45 and has acquired clash marks to the right of the denomination and through the C of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 49.  Reverse AX is in a similar die state as Obverse 49, with the advancement of moderately heavy die flow lines.

Comments:  The Reverse AX retained cud is very similar in size and identical in location to that of the retained cud of Reverse AK from the 1905 Variety 36 die pairing.  Several 1905 reverses develop similar breaks in this area; therefore, care should be taken to determine an accurate reverse identification.

The Reverse AX retained cud was first brought to my attention during late September 2017 by David Killough, who kindly allowed this author to purchase the above plate coin for the purpose of illustrating Variety 49 for this book.

Plate coin:  Keith Bock Collection, AU58 details
