Variety 31
Obverse 31 is observed with date placement at RE.
Reverse AF is observed with a retained cud between 3:30 and 4:30.
Reverse AF develops the following die crack:
1. Die crack from the northernmost part of the retained cud
up through the wreath to a point at 2:30.
Rev. AF.2:
The retained portion of the broken die from 3:30 and 4:30 is
absent, which permits metal to flow into the cavity creating a cud.
In addition, the die crack from the northernmost part of the
cud has extended into the rim at 2:30. The area defined
within this die crack has now formed a retained cud between 2:30 and
3:30.
Comments: The
reverse AF retained cud is very similar to the reverse AE retained cud
of the variety 30 die
pairing.
The reverse AF retained cud was first identified in the book 'The Design Cud', by
Paul Marvin and Arnold Margolis. The Marvin &
Margolis reference number is 1C-05-1R-RET.
The reverse AF.2 cud was first identified in the website
'Cuds-On_Coins', with the image courtesy of Fred Weinberg.
