Obverse 63 is observed with date placement at LH. Obverse 63 has
acquired clash marks and has developed a small die break atop the
eighth feather.
Reverse AAJ has acquired a light clash mark through (C)ENT and has developed the following die crack: 1.
Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 6:15 extends upward
through the left ribbon end, arrow quill, olive leaves and outer edge
of the lowest outer oak leaf, where it exits into the rim at 8:15.
Comments:
Several 1889 reverses crack in a similar location as the Reverse AAJ
die crack. Since recognizing the specific die crack patterns
is necessary for accurate attribution, I have included macro photograpy
of the Reverse AAJ die crack as well as the associated die crack
mapping.
The
difference in severity between the clash marks of Obverse 63 and
Reverse AAJ indicates that the clash mark of Obverse 63 was not
acquired during the Variety 62 clashing event and was acquired in
service during a die pairing other than Variety 62.
Variety 62 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the
above plate coin during early January 2022 for inclusion in this book
based on the die crack of Reverse AAJ.
