Obverse 58 is identified by date placement at LH and microscopic date repunching that features an initial date impression to the south within the lower loop of the first 8.  Obverse 58 has developed moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.

Reverse AAE is in a similar die state as Obverse 58, with the advancement of moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.  Reverse AAE has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 5:00 across the lower wreath to the rim at 7:15.
2.  Light die crack extending from die crack #1 at 7:15 upward through the olive and oak leaves to a point at 8:15.
Rev. AAE.2:  Die crack #1 is now more severe, while die crack #2 has become bolder.  In addition, Reverse AAE has developed the following additional die cracks:
3.  Heavy die crack from the rim at 2:15 downward through the right wreath to the rim at 4:00.
4.  Heavy die crack from die crack #3 at 4:00 downward through the middle and lower arrowheads, ribbon end and wreath stem to die crack #1 at 5:00.

Comments:   Variety 57a may be characterized by a microscopic repunched date obverse with no die cracking and a severely cracked reverse, which features continuous, heavy die cracking between 2:15 and 7:15.

Variety 57 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid November 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Reverse AAE die cracking.

During late August 2019, David Killough submitted an 1889 cent with reverse die cracking between 5:00 and 7:15.  Examination of David's coin revealed his coin to be an eariler die state of Variety 57, prior to the development of the Reverse AAE die cracking between 2:15 and 5:00.  David's 2019 submission has replaced the prior Variety 57 Plate Coin in order to capture the earlier Reverse AAE die state, while the former plate coin is now the Variety 57a Plate Coin.
