Location and Orientation Of Misplaced 1 and 8 Digits
Obverse 56 is identified by date placement at B and the bases of a 1
and 8 digit along the base of the portrait. Obvere 56 has
developed moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.
Reverse AAC has yet to be observed with any die markers.
Comments:
During late July 2018, David Killough submitted the above plate coin in
order to provide an example of Variety 55 for this book. Variety
55 was initially attributed as Snow 39, with Obverse 56 identified by
die lines along the base of the portrait and a repunched 9. Upon
examination of David's coin, I determined that the die lines are
actually the bases of the 1 and 8 digits from an initial date
impression and I discovered that Obverse 56 did not exhibit any date
repunching.
The
Obverse 56 misplaced digits are the result of an initial date
impression that was far to the northeast and rotated approximately 22
degrees counter clockwise with respect to the final date position.
Obverse 56 represents the first confirmed 1889 obverse with
misplaced digits located in the portrait.
