Obverse 50 is observed with date placement at RE and has developed a
small apostrophe shaped die break above the right base of the 1 digit.
Reverse AW has developed the following die cracks: 1. Heavy die crack from the rim at 2:15 downward through the right wreath to the rim at 5:00. 2. Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 2:30 into die crack #1. 3. Heavy die crack from the rim at 6:00 upward through the left wreath to the rim at 8:30.
Comments: The Obverse 50 die break above the right base of the 1 is quite interesting in regard to its distinctive shape and location.
Several
1889 reverses develop die cracking similar in location to that of
Reverse AW. Recognizing the specific die cracking patterns will
be necessary for accurate attributions.
Variety
49 was first identified by John Call, who kindly submitted the above
plate coin for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 50 die break
and Reverse AW die cracking.
