Obverse 49 is observed with date placement at B and die erosion around 'UNITED', below the chin and in front of the neck, above the bust point and below the bust truncation and below the date.  Obverse 49 has developed light die flow lines and has acquired a relatively heavy die clash in front of the eye of Miss Liberty.

Reverse AV is in a similar die state as Obverse 49, with the advancement of light die flow lines.  Reverse AV is observed with a small amount of die rust primarily to the left of C of CENT and a couple prominent die polish lines located between the bottom of the shield to the wreath as well as from E of CENT to the wreath.

Comments:   The Obverse 49 die erosion is most likely the result of premature die erosion due to an improperly annealed obverse working die.  The die erosion is limited to the bottom half of Obverse 49, while the remainder of the surface exhibits light die flow lines.

Variety 48 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during late July 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 49 die erosion.
