1889 Variety 47

Obverse 48

Reverse AU

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Repunched First 8

Repunched Second 8

Obverse 48 is identified by date placement at LE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south within the lower loop of the first 8 and to the south within both loops of the second 8.

Reverse AU has yet to be observed with any die markers.

Comments:   Although it appears as though the 9 digit features an initial date impression to the north within the upper loop, close examination reveals no date repunching.  The perceived initial date impression at the bottom within the upper loop of the 9 is a product of depth of impression from the digit punch.

Variety 47 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid May 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 48 date repunching.
