Die Flow Lines

Obverse 45 is observed with date placement at LH and the presence of die polish lines, with a prominent one from the bottom of the neck into the field.

Reverse AR is observed with light to moderately heavy die flow lines.  Reverse AR develops the following die cracks:
1.  Moderately heavy die crack between 3:15 and 5:00.
2.  Light die crack in the right wreath from die crack #1 extending upward to a point in the wreath at 2:30.

Comments:   Variety 44 may be characterized by an earlier die state obverse and a later die state reverse, with a primary die crack developing between 3:15 and 5:00.  The observed die state difference between Obverse 45 and Reverse AR indicates that Reverse AR may have been in service prior to the Variety 44 die pairing.

Several 1889 reverses crack in a similar manner as Reverse AR and close attention to the die crack pattern of each die is necessary for accurate attribution.

Variety 44 was first identified by this autor during early February 2016.
