Clash Mark through the C of CENT

Obverse 24 is identified by minor repunching to the south within the lower loops of both 8's and additional repunching at the right base of the first 8, with date placement at LH.  Obverse 24 has developed moderately heavy die flow lines and has acquired clash marks in front of the eye and through feathers 6 through 9 from a clashing event with Reverse W.

Reverse W is in a similar die state as Obverse 24, with the advancement of moderately heavy die flow lines.  Reverse W has acquired clash marks to the right of the denomination and through the C of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 24.

Comments:   The Obverse 24 anomaly around the final A of STATES is the most interesting aspect of Variety 24.  I may only speculate that the field area around this letter may have been polished with an abrasive to remove something.  It should be noted that the letter is not in a more shallow relief compared to the other letters as it would be if the entire area were polished.

Variety 22 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid February 2017 for inclusion in this book based on the date repunching of Obverse 24.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, VF30
