Die Crack From 12:30

Die Crack From 2:00

Obverse 5 is identified by a die scratch through the upper lip of Miss Liberty and date placement at LE with digit punch matrix repunching that features initial impressions to the south below the serif of the first 1, within the upper loop of the 8, below the flag of the 7 and below the serif of the second 1.

Type II Reverse D develops the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 12:30 to the shield.
2.  Die crack from the rim at 2:00 downward through the right wreath.

Comments:  The digit punch matrix repunching of Obverse 5 is the result of digits being impressed into the digit punch matrix twice and is not date repunching into the working die.  Since the repunching is found on the digit punch, the doubling on the date will appear on multiple obverses in 1871.
