Reverse AE Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 14 is identified by date placement at LE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the southwest within the upper loop of the 8 and to the north within the lower loop of the 6. Obverse 14 has acquired clash marks above the first three feathers from a clashing event with Reverse AE.

Reverse AE is rotated 5 degrees counter clockwise and has acquired a clash mark located right of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 14.  Reverse AE has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 3:45 extends into the middle arrowhead.
2.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 6:45 extends upward through the arrow quill and the olive leaf above, where it intersects die crack #3.
3.  Heavy die crack from the rim at 9:30 extends downward through the oak and olive leaves of the left wreath.
4.  Die crack from the rim at 10:15 extends across the upper section of the left wreath and continues into the upper left side of the shield.

Comments:  Obverse 14 will later be in service paired with Reverse AAH during the 1865 Fancy 5 Variety 40 Die Pairing.  Reverse AE was undoubtedly retired from service due to either the severe die cracking between 6:45 and 9:30 or a die break developing in this area during a subsequent Reverse AE die state.  It is interesting to note that during the second usage of Obverse 14 during the 1865 Fancy 5 Variety 40 Die Pairing, Reverse AAH develops heavy die cracking in an almost identical location as Reverse AE.

1865 Fancy 5 Variety 15 was first identified by this author during mid July 2019.
