Reverse AU Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 43 was struck from slightly misaligned working dies and is observed with date placement at RE and broken ES of STATES.  Obverse 43 develops a rim break between 11:00 and 12:00 and the following die crack:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 4:00 through the left side of the I of AMERICA through the hair curls.

Reverse AU is rotated 6 degrees clockwise and was struck from misaligned working dies and may be identified by a long hub-through artifact within the right wreath between 2:30 and 3:00 as well as other hub-through artifacts within the vertical shield lines of the shield.  Reverse AU has developed a retained cud between 11:30 and 12:30 and the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 4:00 through the middle arrowhead and continuing upward through the wreath.
2.  Die crack from the bottom of the retained cud beneath the horizontal shield lines to the right wreath.
Rev. AU.2:  A rim break forms at 3:00 and a small die crack at the right shield top from the retained cud now forms a break, which merges with the retained cud.
Rev. AU.3:  The retained portion of the Reverse AU die break is now absent, which results in metal flowing into the resulting void and forming a full cud.

Comments:  The broken ES of STATES is the result of the working hub, which hubbed the working die for Obverse 43, having the ES broken.  The working hub with the broken ES was in service from 1860 through 1864 until the new 1864 with L hub was designed.  The broken ES was repaired directly on some working dies, while others such as obvese 43 were left broken.

Variety 45 was first identified by this author during early Janury 2016.
